Sri Veerattaneswarar temple -Thiruvathigai,Cuddalore, Tamil Nadu(276 Shiva Sthalangal)

The temple of Thiruvathigai, or of Sri Veerattaneswarar, is a Hindu temple dedicated to Shiva. It is located in the village of Thiruvathigai, about 2 kilometres east of Panruti town. The presiding deity, Veerattaaneswarar is.

The place and the temple are closely connected to Saint Tirunavukkarasar ‘s history. While born to Saivite parents and raised by his Shiva devotee sister Thilagavathy, Marul Neekiar, who was his baptismal name, embraced Jainism and rose there with the name Dharumasenar to Guruhood.

His sister, a staunch devotee of Shiva, devoted herself to Lord Shiva ‘s service by upholding the temple, prayed to the Lord seeking the home of her brother to come to Saivism.

Out came Appar’s first hymn spontaneously called Kodhil Neediya Tirupathigam starting with the line “Kootru Aayinavaru Vilakka hileer” Lord Shiva, delighted with his poetic capacity, honoured Appar with the title of Tiru Navukku Arasar-Tirunavukkarasar meaning King of Tongues.
