Sri Saraparameswarar Temple - Thirucherai, Thanjavur ,Tamil Nadu (276 Shiva Sthalangal)

This is one of the 276 Devara Paadal Petra Shiva Sthalams and 95th Shiva Sthalams on the southern bank of the Cauveri River in Chozha Nadu (Thenkarai).Lord Shiva in this temple is a (self-manifested) Swayambumurthi.This temple is very famous as the ‘Kadan Nivarthi Sthalam’ (to erase debts).This east facing temple has two halls, and its main tower (Rajagopuram) has 5-thirds. The last ceremony of consecration (Maha Kumbabishekam) was conducted on 22.01.2018 and before that on 04.04.2004 and 18.03.1992.

In the temple Lord Shiva offers thanks as Swaymbumurthi. He is worshipped as Rina Vimochana Lingeswarar means that the devotees are released from debts.

This is the only temple in which three Durgas, including Shiva Durga, Vaishnavi Durga and Vishnu Durga are present. In the temple Saint Tirunavukkarasar celebrated with a special hymn the Bhairava.

Here Bhairava gives thanks with a tattoo on the left upper arm with a trident and a ring, a shape only seen in this temple. On the 13th, 14th and 15th of Masi (February-March), Sun’s rays rain immediately on Mother’s presiding deity and foot.
