Jambukeswarar Temple, Thiruvanaikaval is a famous Shiva temple in the district of Tiruchirapalli, in Tamil Nadu , India. The temple was founded by some 1,800 years ago by Kocengannan, one of the Early Cholas. It is situated on the island of Srirangam which has the famous temple of Ranganathaswamy.

This temple lies between two rivers in Coromandel, Cauvery in the south, Coleroon in the north. It is one of the five element shrines or sthalams of Pancha Bootha, and is known for the adoration of Lord Siva as reflecting the element of water (appulinga).This temple became known as ‘Thiruvanaikka’ as an Elephant was blessed here after worshipping here.
When Goddess Ahilandeswari penanced here, she was blessed by Lord Siva who was pleased with her prayer. Therefore this temple is also called Gnanashethram.
In his next birth, a spider who worshipped Lord Jambukeswarar in his previous life was honoured to be born as cholan Kochengat.
He built this temple some 2500 years ago. Uma Deviyar, Thirumal, Brahman, Attathikku Balakhar, Attavasukkal, Jambu Munivar, Gowthamar, Aghasthiyar, a spider known as Gananatharul maliyavan, an elephant named Pushbadhanthan, Suryan and Chandran gained glory by worshipping at this temple.
In their literary works Thirugnana Sambanthar, Appar, Sundarar, Arunagirinathar, Iyyadigal kadawarkon, Thayumanavar have enchanted the glory of Lord Jambukeswarar. In this temple, Goddess blessed poet Kalamega Pulavar with the ability to compose poetry.
This temple is endowed with 5 praharams.(corridor) It is known as ‘Thiruneettan thirumathil’ as Lord Siva himself constructed the 5th praharam which appears in the form of Spider. To attain moksha is here Lord Siva blessed a spider and an elephant.In the mandapam, located at the entrance of the Aariyavittan tower in 3rd Praharam, monolithic stone pillars (made from single stone) appear.
Temple cars 2 huge temple cars were made for god & goddess in the year 1910. This temple includes’ Coratham'(used for procession) and many wooden Vahanas. In this temple were found inscriptions 156 Inscriptions. The oldest among them is inscriptions by King Madurai konda Parakesari varman paranthaka cholan.
