Thiruvaiyaru is the Thiruvaiyaru taluk headquarters. Thiruvaiyaru is a small, quiet place. His modesty, however, belies its significance as a center of pilgrims. On Thanjavur Highway, You are pass five bridges across Vadavar, Vettar, Vennar, Kudamurutti, and Cauvery. Thiruvaiyaru is named after it (thiru = sacred; ai = five; aaru = river).

The Siva temple’s presiding deity here, Panchanatheesvarar (in Tamil, Ayyarappan ‘both mean the same thing,’ the Lord of the Five Rivers’) also gets his name from them. Thiruvaiyaru is taken as holy as Varanasi, and bathing in Cauvery here is as assured as bathing in the Ganges to rid the devotees of sins.
