Solapur is a town located in the south-western part of the Indian state of Maharashtra, near its border with Karnataka. Solapur is famous for its Chadder, Handloom, Powerloom and Beedi Industries. One of the inscriptions found in the Solapur fort shows that the town was named Sonalpur while another inscription on the fort well shows that it was known as Sandalpur.The British rulers subsequently pronounced Solapur as Sholapur, and hence the district name.
