Are you relief from Sani Dosham? Do you know there is a powerful temple where Saneeswara Bhagavan was actually born?
Most devotees know Thirunallar as the place to get relief from Saturn’s influence. However, Thirumeichur (Thirumeeyachur) holds a very special and ancient significance—it is considered the Avathara Sthalam (Birthplace) of Lord Saneeswara. Located in the Tiruvarur district of Tamil Nadu, this temple is not just a place of worship but a powerful remedial center for longevity and prosperity.
Here is everything you need to know about the Sirapu (Speciality) and Prasithi (Fame) of this divine shrine.
Enna Sirapu? (What is Special?)
1. The Birthplace of Saneeswara
The most unique feature of Thirumeichur is that it is the birthplace of Saneeswara Bhagavan, along with his brother Yama (God of Death) and Garuda (Vehicle of Vishnu). While Thirunallar is where Saneeswara relieves devotees from trouble, Thirumeichur is where he originated. Worshipping him at his birthplace is believed to bring immense blessings and relief from severe planetary afflictions.
2. Surya Bhagavan’s Penance
Legend says that the Sun God (Surya), the father of Saneeswara, was cursed and lost his color, plunging the world into darkness. He came to Thirumeichur and performed severe penance to Lord Shiva (Meganatha Swami). Pleased by his devotion, Shiva restored Surya’s brilliance.
- Miracle: Even today, during the Tamil month of Chithirai (April-May) from the 21st to the 27th, the sun’s rays fall directly on the presiding deity, Lord Meganatha Swami, signifying Surya’s worship.
3. Lalitha Sahasranamam Origin
This temple is also the sacred ground where the famous Lalitha Sahasranamam (1000 names of Goddess Lalitha) was first revealed by the Vak Devatas to Sage Agastya. Chanting it here is considered extremely powerful.
Yen Prasithi Petrathu? (Why is it Famous?)
1. Pariharam for Longevity (Ayush Homam)
Since this is the birthplace of both Yama (Death) and Saneeswara (Longevity), devotees flock here to perform Mrityunjaya Homam and Ayush Homam to remove the fear of death and ensure a long, healthy life. It is a famous Prarthana Sthalam for those celebrating their 60th (Sashtiapthapoorthi) and 80th (Sathabishekam) birthdays.
2. The Goddess with Anklets (Kolusu)
The Goddess Lalithambigai is famous here for her “Kolusu” (Anklets). Devotees believe that she walks around the temple protecting them. A unique custom here involves offering anklets to the Goddess to pray for marriage and childboons.
3. Shanta Nayagi (Pacified Goddess)
There is a rare sculpture called Kshetra Puraneswara, where Lord Shiva is seen pacifying an angry Goddess Kali. This idol is a marvel of art: from one side, the Goddess looks angry, and from the other, she looks smiling and peaceful. Couples with marital problems worship here for unity.
