However, just as mysteriously as he arrived, the young ascetic disappeared from Shirdi for several years.

His permanent return to Shirdi is a cherished story. He came back as part of a wedding procession for Chand Patilโs family. As the bullock carts pulled up near the Khandoba Temple at the edge of the village, the temple priest, Mhalsapati, looked at the radiant young fakir stepping out of the cart.
Overcome with sudden reverence, Mhalsapati greeted him with the words, “Ya Sai!” (Welcome, Saint!).
The name stuck. From that day on, the nameless fakir became known to the world simply as “Sai.”

By doing this, he practically demonstrated his core teaching: “Sabka Malik Ek” (The Master of All is One). He broke down the rigid barriers of caste and religion that divided society, teaching only the religion of humanity, flanked by Shraddha (Faith) and Saburi (Patience).

“I shall be ever active and vigorous even after leaving this earthly body.”
