This is one of the 276 Devara Paadal Petra Shiva Sthalams and the 38th Shiva Sthalam in Chozha Nadu (Thenkarai), on the southern bank of the Cauveri River. In this temple, Lord Shiva is a (self-manifested) Swayambumurthi.
