This is one of the 276 Devara Paadal Petra Shiva Sthalams and the 9th Shiva Sthalam in Thondai Nadu. There are two principal presiding deities in this temple. Sage Agasthiyar has installed and worshipped Lord Thalapureeswarar. That lingam is said to be a (self-manifested) Swayambumurthi. The disciple of Sage Agasthiyar, Sage Pulasthiyar, had installed and worshipped Lord Krupanatheswarar.

This is an east-facing temple and it has two corridors with an arch style entrance. There is no principal tower in this temple (Rajagopuram).
Both the sanctum sanctorum’s vimanam (roof tower) is built in a special way that is unique to Pallava architecture-the Gaja Brishtam, which looks like the rear of an elephant (Gaja-elephant, brishtam-back).
A few temples of the 276 Paadal Petra Shivasthalams have Palm Tree (Panai) as their Sthala Viruksham. This temple is one such temple. Panaiyur, Panankattur, Puravaar Panankattur, Cheyyar, Thirumazhapadi, Thiru Valampuram and Thiruppanandal are among the others.
