Mahakaleshwar Jyotirlinga is a famous Hindu temple dedicated to Lord Shiva and one of the twelve Jyotirlingams, believed to be Shiva ‘s sacred abodes. It is in Ujjain, in Madhya Pradesh , India. The temple is located next to lake Rudra Sagar. It is believed that the presiding god, Shiva in the lingam form, is Swayambhu, deriving power currents (Shakti) fromShiva in the lingam form is believed to be Swayambhu, deriving currents of power (Shakti) from within itself as against the other images and lingams that are ritually established and invested with mantra-shakti.

King Chandrasena of Ujjain as Lord Shiva ‘s great devotee, and prayed to him all the time. He was once overheard, as he was praying, by the son of a peasant, Shrikhar. The lad wished to pray with the king but was thrown out by the soldiers of the palace and brought to the outskirts of Ujjain.The boy then overheard Ujjain rivals kings Ripudamana and Singhaditya talk about attacking the city. Instantly he began to pray to the Lord to protect his city. The priest Vridhi heard the news, and began to pray to Lord Shiva on the banks of the Kshipra River at the behest of his sons.With the aid of the demon Dushan, Ripudamana and Singhaditya attacked Ujjain, and succeeded in plundering the city and assaulting Lord Shiva’s devotees.Lord Shiv appeared in his mahakal form upon hearing the priest’s plea and his devotees, and vanquished Ripudamana and Singhaditya. He decided to remain in Ujjain at the behest of Shrikhar and Vridhi to protect the town and its devotees
From that day on, the Lord has lived in the lingam in his mahakal form, and everyone who worships the lingam is expected to be free from death and disease, and blessed by the Lord for the remainder of his life.

This unique feature can only be found in the temple at Mahakaleshwar. The Ganesh, Kartikeya, and Parvati idols are installed in the temple ‘s western, eastern, and northern corners. The temple has 5 stages, one of which is subway.The temple lies in a wide courtyard, surrounded by high walls and a lake. It is assumed that the prasada provided in this temple can be offered up again, a belief that is not present in any of the other temples of jyotirlinga.
