An ancient temple dedicated to the Hindu god Shiva is one of the world’s largest natural harbours. It is on the dramatic Gokarna Bay at the head of Konesar Malai (Swami Rock), a seasonal home of blue whales.

The colourful Koneswaram temple sits high above the harbour, a classical-medieval complex in the Eastern Province city of Trincomalee, surrounded by jaw-dropping scenery on all sides.

The site is a religious centre for pilgrims and is one of five “Pancha Ishwarams” (Shiva’s abodes) founded in Sri Lanka’s coastal regions to honour Hinduism ‘s supreme god.

The dates of the temple were discussed, with some scholars citing the original about 400 BC, and from as early as the 5th century to as late as the 18th, later building.
