Thoothukudi is historically known for pearl fishing and shipping, salt processing, and other business related activities. This is a port city in Tamilnadu’s southern zone. This is a natural port, V.O. Chidambaranar controlled the Swadeshi shipping company during the British rule from this location. Thoothukudi is now a busy city with business operations.
The Panimaya Matha Church (Shrine Basilia of Our Lady of Snow) is a popular Portuguese church built in 1711. The church festival is held every year on 5th August in a grand manner that attracts a large number of devotees from all faiths.
Adichanallur is on the road to Tiruchendur, at 20 km from Tirunelveli. This place has a glorious history from an archaeological point of view and is situated on the banks of the Tamirabarani River. Kayathar, on the way to Madurai, is located about 25 km from Tirunelveli. Kattabomman, one of the first freedom fighters who fought in India against British rule, was hanged there by the British in 1799. To honour the memory of this great freedom fighter, a memorial has been installed here by the Tamilnadu government.
The ancient Pandian port town of Korkai in the Sagam era is situated on the main road from Tiruchendur to thoothukudi. From Tiruchendur, it is 29 km. The Korkai Tank is said to be korkai kulam, 250 acres in extent. An ancient Temple of Vettrivelamman is also located here. This temple is visited by a significant number of visitors.

The best time for a peaceful darshan on weekdays is from 12 noon to the evening.
