Due to the pearl fishing carried out in the area, Tuticorin is known as “Pearl City.” With A History Dating Back To The 6th Century AD Establishing Fascinating History From The Pandian Kingdom To The Cholas During The Time Between the 9th and 12th Century, it is also one of the major seaports in India.
Tuticorin is often referred to by the term Muthu Kuzhithurai. It’s also named “Tamil Nadu ‘s Sea Gateway.” Tuticorin is part of the Pearl Fishery Coast and is known for its industry of pearl fishing and shipbuilding. For more than 2000 years, the ancient town of Korkai (Modern Tuticorin) has been a hub for maritime trade and pearl fishing.
