Tiruchirappalli is a busy and bustling city with ancient churches , temples and monuments, famously called Tiruchi and Trichy. The ancient capital of Cholas passed through the Pandayas, the Sultanates and the British, and now has an important history. When the temperature is moderate, October to February is a good time to visit.
Thiruvanaikkaval is located approximately 5 km from Trichy and 2 km east of Srirangam. Lord Siva is the principal deity of this temple. Tiru aanaikka is the name of the temple because an elephant is believed to worship the Sivalingam with flowers and water brought into his trunk, so it is called Jambukeswarar and a Jambu tree is set under the Lingam. It is one of the Water Panchabhoota Stalams.
Vayalur is approximately 18 km from Trichy. This place has an ancient temple for Lord Muruga set amongst lush green vegetation, popularly known as Kumara Vayalur and Adi Vayalur. With five levels, the main tower is richly ornamented. The sacred tank that Lord Muruga created with his Vel is in the front. Kumara Tirtha, Shakti Tirtha and Agni Tirtha are known under different names.
Tiruchi is about 30 km from Viralimalai. This place is famous for the temple of Subramanya, situated on a small hill in a beautiful setting. The upper temple dates back to the 15th century. There is also a small cave temple on the hill called Chokkanathar Mandapam, where it is said that with the powers of Ashtasiddhi, Arunagirinathar was blessed by the deity.
About 38 km from Trichy is Thirukadambathurai. The small village on the banks of the River Cauvery, popularly known as Kadambar Kovil, has an ancient Shiva temple dedicated to Kadamba Vaneshwarar with a consort called Bala Kunjambika. Tradition says that the place with a number of Kadamba trees was originally the hermitage of the sage Kanca.
Perumal Malai is approximately 36 km away from Tiruchi. The Prasanna Venkatachalapathi temple is situated near the village of Thurayur, on a hill called Perumal Malai. This Vaishnava temple was built by the Nayaka kings in the 16th
century. The temple can be reached by climbing the 1532steps from the foot of the hill. A motorised ghat road was also laid up to the top.
Shirdi is the dwelling place of the ever-penetrating Saint Shri Saibaba. Shirdi is a spiritual city with a high intensity of devotion.
