Amritavarshini is the temple tank, which measured 28 m bu 30 m. Three other bodies of water are present, namely Bilva Theertha, Viswananthirtha, and Mukundathirtha. Several deities, namely Gangadevi, Jaleswara, Rameswara, Gautameswara, Kedarnath, Rama, Krishna, Parasurama, and Lakshmi Narayana, are represented. The temple also has several saintly monasteries and samadhis. According to the Shiva Purana, Brahma and Vishnu (the Hindu god of preservation) once argued in terms of creation supremacy. Shiva perforated the three realms as a massive everlasting pillar of fire, the jyotirlinga, to test them. Vishnu and Brahma divided their directions down and up to reach the end of the light in either direction, respectively. Brahma lied because, though Vishnu conceded his defeat, he found out the source. Shiva emerged as the second pillar of light and cursed Brahma that he would have no role in ceremonies when Vishnu would be revered until the end of time. The jyotirlinga is the ultimate partless reality, in which Shiva appears partially.
Endowed with religious opulence, Bhimashankar Hill Station is richly enveloped in nature’s ethereal pulchritude and is rightly called one of Mumbai’s popular hill stations. It is said that the great Maratha king Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj made endowments to this temple to encourage service of worship. It is among the twelve traditional Lord Shiva shrines in India called ‘Jyotirlinga.’ Bhimashankar is located in Bhorgiri village, in the Sahyadri range ghat region. Since the jyotirlinga, it is considered one of the holiest sites in India. Even Bhimashankar is a popular trekking destination. Bhimashankar ‘s Sacred Shrine is an architectural work in the Naga style. The temple beautifully shows the insightful work of ancient Vishwakarma sculptors. Located atop the hills, this place is perfect for nature lovers and trekkers alike. It has acquired tremendous significance in recent years and was declared a Wildlife Sanctuary. The modest yet graceful temple dates back to the 13th century and is also adorned with cravings for Buddha. A trek into the temple of Bhimashankar brings a touch of excitement to your holy tour.
