According to the Shiva Purana, Brahma and Vishnu (the Hindu god of preservation) once argued in terms of creation supremacy.
Shiva perforated the three realms as a massive everlasting pillar of fire, the jyotirlinga, to test them. Vishnu and Brahma divided their directions down and up to reach the end of the light in either direction, respectively. Brahma lied because, though Vishnu conceded his defeat, he found out the source.
Shiva emerged as the second pillar of light and cursed Brahma that he would have no role in ceremonies when Vishnu would be revered until the end of time. The jyotirlinga is the ultimate partless reality, in which Shiva appears partially.
