A village in Nevasa taluka of Ahmednagar district in Maharashtra is 72 km from Shirdi and 44 km from Ahmednagar, Shani Shingnapur, or Sonai. The village is renowned for its famous Shani Mahadev temple, the Hindu god aligned with the planet (graha) Saturn. This is one of India’s most prominent Shani temples and also one of the famous pilgrimage places near Pune to visit. At the Shingnapur temple, the statue of Lord Shanidev is swayambhu and the temple is believed to be a jagrut devachan, indicating that in the temple a god still exists. In the shape of a black stone that is five and a half feet high on an open-air platform, the deity is personified. Alongside the stone, there is a Trishul as well as a Nandi on the south. The small images of Shiva and Hanuman are in front. Later, a multi-deity temple facing east was constructed west of the Shani idol. There is also a tomb of Saint Udasi Baba on the grounds and a temple devoted to Dattatreya.
There are no doorways to the houses in the whole village around Shani Shingnapur Temple. Tjag runtlagers claim that anyone trying to rob is punished by the god Shani. According to the legend, some 150 years ago, an immense black object sat on the lake, which the local shepherds found after the lake had drained out. Blood began oozing from it when one of them touched it with a pointed rod. That night, in the dream of the devoted shepherds, Shaneshwara emerged and claimed that he wanted to live in the same shape in the village without a roof above him. He vowed in exchange that there would never be any fear of robbery in the village.
Thousands of devotees visit the Shani temple every day, and Saturday is the busiest day. Shani Trayodasi is regarded to be the Lord ‘s favourite day. Similarly, Saturday landing on Amavasya is considered to be Lord Shanaishwara ‘s favourite day and devotees throng to the temple in large numbers. After taking a bath, devotees are authorised to enter the temple premises. At the Shani Shingnapur Temple, prayers are offered by the devotees in traditional dhotis.
