Renuka’s legends are found in the Mahabharata, the Harivamsa, and the Bhagavata Purana. Goddess Renuka is known for her chastity. Located approximately 35 km from Aurangabad City and approximately 2 km from the UNESCO-listed Ellora Caves, it is home to the 12th and last Jyotirlinga on earth. Temples are usually considered to have their origins before the 13th century. The temple faced frequent destruction during the 13th and 14th centuries, under the rule of the Delhi Sultanate. Maloji Bhosale who was the grandfather of Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj restored it in the 16th century. And after this the temple suffered assaults.
Built in the typical architectural style of the South Indian temple, the Grishneshwar Temple shows an elaborately designed five-tier shikhara. The temple complex consists of a sanctum sanctorum, a square room measuring approximately 289 square feet, and chambers inside.
