Jambukeswarar Temple, Thiruvanaikaval is a famous Shiva temple in the district of Tiruchirapalli, in Tamil Nadu , India. The temple was founded by some 1,800 years ago by Kocengannan, one of the Early Cholas. It is situated on the island of Srirangam which has the famous temple of Ranganathaswamy.

This temple lies between two rivers in Coromandel, Cauvery in the south, Coleroon in the north. It is one of the five element shrines or sthalams of Pancha Bootha, and is known for the adoration of Lord Siva as reflecting the element of water (appulinga).

This temple became known as ‘Thiruvanaikka’ as an Elephant was blessed here after worshipping here.

As Lord Siva sits at this temple beneath the Jambuke tree, he got his name Jambukeswaram. When Goddess Ahilandeswari penanced here, she was blessed by Lord Siva who was pleased with her prayer. Therefore this temple is also called Gnanashethram.
