The Founder Lord Bramha and Lord Thirumal the Protector entered into a dispute among themselves to decide who was the best.
Lord Siva has been called upon to be the judge. Lord Siva advised them that the best would be someone who could see his crown, as well as his feet.
Then Lord Siva was transformed into a Jothi (a column of fire) that touched the heavens and the earth. Thirumal took the varaha avatar (wild boar) and searched deep into the soil to find the feet of Siva but ultimately admitted defeat. Bramha took a swan shape, and flew to see Siva ‘s crown.
Unable to see the crown, Bramha saw a thazhambu flower falling down that had decked Siva ‘s head. He asked the flower about the distance from Siva ‘s crown by which the flower replied he had dropped for forty thousand years. Bramha, thinking he couldn’t hit the crown, asked the florist to serve as a false witness.
The thazhambu flower acting as a false witness proclaimed the crown to have been seen by Brahma. Siva became furious at the deceit and cursed that Bramha should have no temple on earth and not use the thazhambu flower when praying to Lord Shiva. The location where Lord Siva stood for destroying the ego as a column of fire is Thiruvannamalai.
The Annamalai Hill was Agni (fire) in Krithayugam, Manikkam (Emerald) in Threthayugam, Pon (Gold) in Dwaprayugam, and Rock in Kaliyugam according to ancient legend. Siva who was in the form of a column of fire took the shape of a Sivalingam at the foot of the hill where the Arulmigu Annamalaiyar Temple is situated, at the request of Thirumal and Bramha by their devoted prayer.
